There are those recipes, ya know the ones. Those old-timey recipes that remind you of simpler times. Ham and Beans come to mind as well as classic Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese. Beef and Noodles would qualify as well as Chicken and Dumplings.

When I saw that my pal Krista over at Everyday Mom Meals shared her Crockpot Split Pea Soup recipe in one of my favorite Gooseberry Patch cookbooks of all time (Slow Cooking All Year ‘Round), I knew I had to try it. Split Pea Soup had been on my list of must make soups for a while and now I knew I had a winner of a recipe to give it a try ;). (Psst… You should really check out Krista’s Crock Pot Spicy Beef Quesoand Crock Pot Chicken and Noodles while you are over on her site.)

The beauty of this soup is that it is super easy to throw together and the crock pot does all the work for you. You just put all your ingredients in the slow cooker and add enough water to cover your split peas. Since I had just cooked up my ham, I added some extra flavor by taking a cup of my ham juices as the first “water” I added to my crock pot. You then stir occasionally while the split peas cook down and eventually they produce a very thick soup. You just need to watch and add water as needed while the soup cooks and add enough at the end to have the soup reach your desired consistency. Easy Peasy 😉

Slow Cooker Recommendations

If you are going to have to step away from this soup for a while as it cooks down, I wouldrecommendusingan automatic stirring slow cookeralthough a regular 5-6qt slow cooker will work just fine. This particular slow cookerautomatically kicks on every two hours to stir things up nicely.
