Final thoughts from Texas Rangers’ loss to Seattle: Early hole leads to lost series (2024)

ARLINGTON — Momentum for the Texas Rangers, it seems, is as hard to come by these days as a healthy starting pitcher is.

They’ve been no more than two games above or two games below .500 since an April 8 loss to the Houston Astros, and no more than 1.5 games up or half a game back of first place in the AL West through the season’s first month.

Thursday’s series finale against Seattle presented an opportunity to climb back to two games over .500. Instead, a third-consecutive series loss to an AL West opponent dropped them back to .500 on the dot. Starting pitcher Andrew Heaney was marred by a pair of two-run home runs over the course of six otherwise fine innings pitched. Texas’ bullpen, for the second-straight game, was flawless as Cole Winn and Josh Sborz combined for three scoreless.

The offense, though, missed some opportunities. Two of its four runs came courtesy of solo home runs, and the Rangers hit just 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

Here are three thoughts from the Rangers’ second-straight series loss:

Another early deficit: Like a kid at the beach, Rangers starting pitchers have shown a propensity to dig some holes lately. They’ve allowed eight first-inning runs in Texas’ last four games, a stretch in which the Rangers have managed just a single win.

On Sunday, in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves, Marcell Ozuna pummeled a first-inning three-run home run off of Michael Lorenzen. The Mariners took a 2-0 first-inning lead on Dane Dunning in Tuesday’s series opener with a two-run homer from Cal Raleigh, and they led 1-0 after the first inning on Wednesday after Julio Rodriguez (leadoff triple) scored on a Mitch Haniger groundout against Jon Gray.

Rodriguez and Ty France combined to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Thursday. Rodriguez led off with a single against Heaney, then France drilled a fastball into right for an opposite-field home run.

“It is something we’re aware of,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said before Thursday’s game. “We’ve just got to work on hitting that strike zone a little bit better in the first inning.”

Josh H. Smith, and H stands for “Hits”: The first three Rangers team leaders in WAR, according to Baseball Reference, check out to some extent: Evan Carter, Adolis Garcia and Marcus Semien are each tied top the leaderboard at 1.1.

Can you guess who’s fourth? It’s Josh Smith, of course. A utility infielder who’s quickly become one of the Rangers’ most valuable position players in the season’s first month.

Smith went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double in Thursday’s loss. He pulled a Luis Castillo slider into the right corner for a one-out double in the second inning and reached third on a Haniger error. He jumped on a high Castillo fastball in the fourth and drove it 364 feet into right for a game-tying solo home run, his first of the season.

The 26-year-old started at shortstop with Corey Seager at designated hitter on Thursday, but has received the lion’s share of reps at third base with Josh Jung (wrist fracture) sidelined. Smith has slashed .292/.393/.417 in 25 games this season and ranked second teamwide in batting average and OPS (.810).

No time wasted: At one point last season, during one of Seager’s hot streaks following a reinstatement from the injured list, Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe was asked how the shortstop was able to return to play so seamlessly following an injury.

Lowe effectively shrugged, unable to answer the question because he himself had never been on the injured list.

He may have a better answer now.

Lowe hit his first home run of the season in the first inning when he sent a Castillo slider 383 feet into the Rangers’ bullpen to cut Seattle’s lead to 2-1. The Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winner has slashed .294/.400/.529 and has reached base seven times in the five games he’s played in since his reinstatement from the injured list.
